It kind of sucks and the last thing I want to be doing is blogging. However, I found an interesting application of "living in the information" age today. When I logged onto my facebook I found over 20 people had written on my wall wishing me a happy birthday. Many of these people I've never talked to for a few years. Of course, not all these people remembered my birthday, but facebook reminds you about when your friends have birthdays. So, I wonder then, if facebook didn't remind people about my birthday and people didn't check their facebook so often, how many wall edits would I have actually had???

I'm the pledgemaster for my fraternity and I wanted my guys (the spring class) to have shirts for their pledgeclass. An amazing thing about the internet now is that we were able to send the design to a shirt maker and they were able to preview and tell us how much it would cost. Not only that, we were able to design the shirt using software, which is much cleaner than a design by hand. In addition to designing, we were able to order them too. Obvoiously, another implication of living in the information age, MMORPGs allow millions of people to interact simultaneously. Crazy stuff, really. His speech was pretty damn good and he made alot of good points. One thing in particular that struck me was when a man asked Jones if he thinks that racism will ever go away and what we can do about it. He replied that the reason racism is so prevelent is because people continue to talk about it and make a big deal about it and that the only way racism will go away is when people stop talking about it. I thought that this was a very practical and revolutionary idea and completely agreed with it. Seeing Jones was a surreal experience, especially when he did the voice from Lion King. This doesn't really apply to the information age, but I still thought it was interesting.

So this is my first post in awhile. I have been slacking, I won't lie and my blog proves it. Anyways, I've been really busy. I am now the inductor for my fraternity which means that I am in charge of all the new spring pledges...pretty big responsiblity. Not only that, but I had a Judo tournament last weekend in which I qualified for nationals, so now I have to train for nationals. So what's new in the information age. Well, I recently started using Gmail and it's pretty awesome. I can use filters to filter "information". That's probably my favorite part. Actually, my other favorite part is that I don't have to use outlook anymore. One click and I can see all my email with everything fowarded from webmail. It's CRAZY. It isn't actually but it is a good representation of how living in the information age is very useful and efficient. I'm pretty hungry so I'm going to go get some food and think about things.

So I was thinking about this whole information age and how it can be a renaissance and it can bring clarity. While I agree for the most part, during class on tuesday was a perfect example how information can be subject to "noise" and in that way the Information age doesn't provide clarity. We had an assignment to create a game that applied to Beniger and Rushkoff. While many people struggled to apply a game to their concepts many simply made games based on completely different things such as, business people and celebrities. Our professor then showed us which games received the best grades and none of the games that followed the guidelines made it. As you can see, this is a perfect example of how information can be interpreted differently ("noise") and thus the information age is not free of inherent problems.

Living in the information age is pretty cool I'd say. For example, I'm going on spring break to lake tahoe to go snowboarding. Me and my friends have gotten our tickets and made all of our plans through the internet. We were able to compare prices and everything. Only a few years ago, none of this would have been possible. Today, I even went to the squaw valley website and looked a live webcam of the mountain. Not only did that make me more excited, but I knew what I was in for and gave me a small glipse of the amount of fun I will be having. Some people have all this "technology stuff", but man, being able to look at this mountain and figure out where I want to snowboard and what I want to see long before I get there is pretty cool.

Today I used email to tell my professor that I was suffering from a very intense migraine headache and wouldn't be coming to class. A number of years ago I would have just had to not show up and tell him later. Most likely, he wouldn't have believed me. Many students lie about things like this in order to skip class. However, since I sent him and email previous to me not showing up there's a much greater chance he will know that I was telling the truth and I won't miss any attendance points. Email is pretty awesome and migraines really hurt.
